A traditional residential elevator generally uses a dedicated enclosed vertical path with landings at each served floor. It can integrate cleanly into architecture, particularly when planned into new construction or a major remodel.
Shaftless or reduced-hoistway approaches
Some residential products are designed to reduce traditional shaft construction. They can be attractive for certain retrofits, but the available models may have specific limits around travel, cab size, placement, entrances, or installation conditions.
Which is better for an existing home?
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on where the elevator can go, who will use it, how many floors need service, how much construction is acceptable, and which product requirements the home can satisfy.

Before choosing based on appearance or technology, identify the viable vertical path through the home. That will often narrow the product category quickly.
