Planning before product selection

Home Elevator Space & Layout Requirements

There is no single universal footprint for every home elevator. Space requirements are product-specific and include more than the cab itself.

Think beyond the cab dimensions

A home elevator project may need room for the cab, shaft or enclosure, doors, landing clearances, equipment, electrical components, and structural framing. The exact arrangement depends on the selected system.

Stacked space matters

For elevators connecting multiple floors, the vertical route must work at each level. A location that appears open on one floor may conflict with a bedroom, plumbing, framing, or another use above or below.

Door orientation changes the layout

Entry and exit direction can influence how the elevator fits into circulation. Some projects benefit from same-side doors; others may need a different arrangement to connect useful spaces.

Accessibility changes the planning brief

If wheelchair use is expected, do not evaluate only whether a product can technically fit in the house. Consider the rider, mobility device, door access, and maneuvering space around the landings as a complete route.
